This dashboard combines two free, open flight-data sources: Heathrow's own public WebTrak radar feed (authoritative recent history) and the OpenSky Network (real-time live tail). A backend process caches the merged data locally, so the page loads instantly.
Runway data: Each arrival's landing runway is derived from its radar track — the two parallel runways are ~1.4 km apart, so an aircraft's lateral position on final approach identifies the northern runway (27R / 09L) or southern (27L / 09R), and its direction of travel identifies westerly (27) vs easterly (09) operations.
Data coverage: The tracker maintains a rolling 3-month window. WebTrak provides authoritative history (fetched every few hours); OpenSky fills the live gap between those runs so the view is never stale. Each flight is counted once when it lands at LHR. If cached data is unavailable, the page falls back to a live WebTrak fetch, then to wind-based estimation as a last resort.
